So I Really Do Need a Priest - by Al Mohler

Saturday, June 26, 2010. Another beautiful day in Palm Springs. It was 11:00 in the morning and everyone waited excitedly in their seats, fidgitting with their pens and notebooks as they waited for the conference to begin. Another beautiful time of singing and worship took place that morning and Al Mohler was scheduled to preach first. His message began.
We need a priest. We don't need a human priest, but we need a priest who can atone for our sins. The Catholic church claims that there is no sin that they can't cure. People don't see the need for a priest because they look through worldly eyes. No priest on earth except Jesus Christ could ever atone for all our past, present, and future sins.
How good is our understanding of Jesus and Biblical theology? We worship a "sentimental Jesus" and not the real Jesus. The "sentimental Jesus" is the Jesus Who makes our lives comfortable, Who gives us everything we want in life, Who "promises wealth, health, and prosperity". Is this the Jesus of the Bible? Is Jesus today just someone whom we have a sentimental gush over? The "sentimental Jesus" of today's churches is not the priestly Jesus in the Bible, the only true and living Jesus. We have rejected Jesus, His authority, His power, His miracles, and His life. If He is not your priest now, you can't be saved.
1: Jesus is a prophet.
2: Jesus is a priest.
3: Jesus is a King.

Acts 3:22-24 says, "Moses said, 'The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like Me from your brethren; to Him you shall give heed to everything He says to you. And it will be that every soul that does not heed that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people. And likewise, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and his successors onward, also announced these days."

Hebrews 9:11 says, "But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation;"

Hebrews 4 also speaks of Jesus being our High Priest.
He GAVE His life. Jesus's death was the last sacrifice for all sins and no longer must their be the shedding of blood of lamb or goat or any animal. We ourselves could never die as a substitute for sin. The people of the Old Testament had to offer sacrifices to the Lord for the forgiveness of sins. Hebrews 9:22b says, "And without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." Jesus was the last sacrifice and He has paid the ransom for our sins and we no longer need to sacrifice for His forgiveness. He sacrificed Himself and forgave us. The sacrifices in the Old Testament were only taken to lead up to Jesus's sacrifice. Then, all sacrifices were accomplished by His death on the cross.

1: He suffered for us.
2: He sacrificed for us.
3: He saved us.
4: He is a substitutional priest.
5: He is a superior priest.
6: He is a supernatural High Priest.
7: He is a solitary High Priest.
8: He is the sufficient High Priest.
9: He is our sovereign High Priest.
10: He is a sympathetic High Priest.

Jesus paid the price we could never paid. He sacrificed His very life for us, His beloved children and set us free.
